Tutor and 'camera lady' honored for 20 years of service

Thornton Fractional North High School employee Karen Lake was recognized last month for more than 20 years of service with an Award of Excellence during the school's Distinguished Service Awards Program.
Sponsored by the Illinois Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association, the award celebrates deserving staff and supporters of local school districts.
Lake, of Calumet City, began working at TF North in 2002, when her children attended the school. She was also a preschool volunteer and a PTA member, and served on the District 157 school board for eight years.
“My children received an excellent education at TFN which prepared them for college and successful professions. In a sense, I am giving back to those students who need additional support in order to become successful,” Lake said.
Lake currently works with four freshman algebra teachers to provide tutoring.
In 2004, she also became the school’s publicity representative and enjoys highlighting student activities and accomplishments. Along the way, she became known as the “camera lady.”
“I love taking candids of students interacting with staff at events and engaged in learning. I am usually seen with the camera slung on my shoulder, ready for a photo opportunity,” she said.
Lake was also the recipient of the Excellence Counts Award given by the District 215 Board of Education in March.
