How Educators Can Model Democratic Decision Making In Schools

Excerpted from “These Schools Belong to You and Me: Why We Can’t Afford to Abandon Our Public Schools” by Deborah Meier and Emily Gasoi (Beacon Press, 2017). Reprinted with Permission from Beacon Press. The following excerpt was written by Meier.

FOSTERING A CULTURE OF TRUST

While few traditional schools encourage enough of the kind of open exchange described in the previous section, the level of student freedom to voice opinions tends to increase in accordance with the student body’s socioeconomic status, with schools that serve a predominantly poor population often severely limiting student expression to canned content. It’s as if we do not trust children from poor communities to develop and express their own ideas. This stance can take a particularly pernicious form when schools enlist the help of modern technology in this ignoble cause, creating surveillance technologies replete with hidden cameras, locker searches, and police patrols roaming the corridors, and relentlessly excluding those who resist. Even though the lion’s share of student-initiated school violence over the past twenty-five years has been carried out in majority-white schools (beginning with the Columbine High School massacre and most recently at Sandy Hook Elementary School), police-state security has only increased in schools that serve more than 50 percent students of color. The National Association of School Psychologists, along with numerous and educators, warns that heightened security measures negatively impact a school’s learning environment and undermine the fundamental relationships between adults and children, making it impossible to nurture the degree of trust and respect that should characterize all schools in a democracy.

Through my experience starting democratically governed schools, I have come to understand the importance of creating systems and structures that support open, honest resistance from all constituents—students, teachers, families, and even administrators, who must be in a position to resist external mandates that threaten the integrity of the school culture. Interestingly, over the years, I have found myself drawn to teachers who have been considered “troublemakers,” many of them had even been fired from their former schools for being such.

But with each school that I helped start—first, the Central Park East and Coalition Schools in New York City, and then, Mission Hill School in Boston—I gained insight into how to better work with staff to establish cultural norms that encourage healthy disagreement and pushback. We set up forums in which members of the school community were invited to air their grievances and share their ideas for improvement; we kept the school community small enough that everyone could come to know and feel known by everyone else; we created formal tools to facilitate a peer-review process that involved teachers and colleagues from sister schools and universities providing one another with critical feedback.

At Mission Hill School, we required that, upon accepting a position, teachers agree to meet together regularly to identify and hash out solutions for an array of problems that invariably arise in the daily operation of a school. We became more intentional about setting up structures that would make visible the nearly constant negotiations involved in establishing and sustaining a well functioning community—it was imperative that teachers see their administrators push back against external mandates and that students see their teachers engaged in discussions, sometimes heated, generally passionate, about how to address long- and short-term questions of practice.

The bottom line is, if we are ever going to fulfill the promise for schools to become incubators for democracy, then that task requires creating a democratic adult culture within the schools themselves that mirrors the one we want for children. For if we expect the young to grow into judicious citizens and thoughtful, competent stewards in matters of national and global welfare, then it only makes sense that we start by trusting local constituents— students, parents, teachers, and neighbors—to weigh in on and make decisions concerning the serious matters that affect their lives in school.

Unfortunately, the last two decades of education reform have increasingly been characterized by a disconnect between the original purpose of education and anything remotely resembling foundational ideas about democracy. As a sign of the times, over the past ten years or so, I have noticed a trend in the kinds of questions audience members tend to ask after my talks. Invariably, a teacher or principal stands up and urges me to share my thoughts on what the way forward might be — where, in my travels across the education landscape, have I found glimmers of hope for democratic education? Sometimes they tell about their own struggles, attempting to find cracks in which to do authentic work with children in rigid school settings or fighting to keep alive the vision in a small, progressive school amidst myriad pressures to conform to some uninspired norm. Sometimes they ask a question simply to gain some sense of connection with like-minded practitioners in order to stay afloat professionally because they are losing steam or heart, or both.

I try to respond with optimism—there are indeed great public schools, new and established, rural and urban, in-system and charter sprinkled across the country. But regardless of a school’s values, vision, or organization, all face multiple obstacles to staying true to their underlying mission of public purpose. Most significantly, the unrelenting pressure to tie everything they do to student test scores, in conjunction with a growing disregard for the professional knowledge of educators, makes it near impossible for democratic (and other, otherwise innovative) schools to “hold values.” As a result, many great schools are being closed or mandated to employ more standardized practices and our most creative and inspired educators are leaving the public schools or education altogether, out of frustration.

What policies would reverse this trend? In a 2016 report by the Learning Policy Institute, the researchers cite conditions in schools as the primary factor influencing teachers’ decision of whether or not to leave the profession. In particular, the authors explain, “Accountability pressures focused on test preparation and leading to sanctions comprised the most frequently cited area of dissatisfaction, listed by 25% of teachers who left.” Clearly, policies that placed less emphasis on the production of and outcomes from numeric data would be a good first step in the right direction. Unfortunately, we live in a time when, despite widespread acknowledgement at all levels that standardized testing is “sucking all the oxygen out of the room,” as former secretary of education Arne Duncan ironically proclaimed in 2014, there has been a continuation, if not an intensification, of policies that require schools to value numeric data over human judgment.

Human judgment being at the heart of democratic practice in and beyond schools, this current state of affairs regarding mistrust of educators and an over-reliance on external “experts” (or, indeed, on those with business expertise in place of education experience), and the data they demand and produce leaves us with a fundamental conundrum. How can we hope to educate for democracy if children and the adults in their lives never have the opportunity to observe or practice it? And if such an education doesn’t take place in our public schools, then where will it happen?

Deborah Meier, author “The Power of Their Ideas” and “In Schools We Trust,” has spent more than five decades working in public education as a parent, school-board member, teacher, principal, writer, and advocate. She helped found the Coalition of Essential Schools in the 1980s, under the leadership of Ted Sizer. In 1987, she received a MacArthur award for her work in public education.

Emily Gasoi has been an educator for more than two decades and was a founding teacher at Mission Hill School in Boston. Gasoi currently lives in Washington, DC, where she adjuncts at Georgetown University and is co-founder of Artful Education, an organization focused on helping schools and arts organizations improve practices related to creative teaching and learning.

8 Tips for New Year's Solution Setting

  1. Make time. It’s as simple as that. You have to schedule your activity times otherwise they just won’t happen. Sadly, it’s always easier to not do something than it is to do it.
  2. year-resolution-400x400Make it family time. Try and plan some activities that you can do as a family so that, not only do you get fit, you can also enjoy more time interacting together and build stronger relationships.
  3. Parents – lead by example. You can’t nag the kids then expect them to do something you’re not willing to do. Show them the benefits of exercise and they’ll soon follow.
  4. Start a journal or a blogMake yourself accountable! When you have others tracking your progress, it’s hard to get out of it. Keeping a fitness and nutrition journal also allows you to analyze your progress at the end of each month. Consider investing in an expert to give you feedback, help you discuss areas for improvement and next steps.
  5. You are what you eat. It’s an old one but a good and true one. Cut back on sugar and sodium, eat lots of green, leafy veg, and remember to drink plenty of water. Sticking to a balance of meats, fruit and veg never fail.  TIP: Try the “More Philosophy” if you stuck for a plan.
  6. Be realistic, be gradual. What works for one person or family, may not work for the next. You have to decide what is realistic for you and your lifestyle. Set achievable goals, reassess them often and reward yourselves with a small treat when you smash your targets.
  7. Enjoy it! Getting fit and active doesn't have to be a chore. Incorporate it into something you all love or have a passion for. Make it fun, competitive and set incentives. After all, it has been proven that laughter is good for us.
  8. Challenge yourself. It takes just 21 days to form a habit. In the grand scheme of life, that’s not long. Commit to making a change. Be vocal about it!  Tell your friends, family, and co-workers that this year is your year to make a change and demand accountability.  Start with a 90-day challenge and see what happens… TIP:  use SMART goal setting when setting goals.

The Guarantee

I can guarantee that if you follow the above steps you'll succeed in making this year one of your healthiest yet.  Just remember, once you've set the plan in motion and stay consistent with the plan, eventually it WILL become your lifestyle… and at that point, you're on autopilot.

Make it count!

Don`t wait, just do it.  I'm here to help you and be an accounta-buddy… drop me a line below and let me know all about your New Year solutions and goals.

How Parents Can Help Kids Navigate the Pressures of Their Digital Lives

As adults witness the rising tides of teenaged anxiety, it’s tough not to notice a common thread that runs through the epidemic — something that past generations never dealt with. Clutched in the hand of nearly every teen is a smartphone, buzzing and beeping and blinking with social media notifications.

Parents, all too often, just want to grab their teen’s phone and stuff it in a drawer. But is social media and the omnipresence of digital interactions really the cause of all this anxiety?

The short answer is: It’s complicated.

Recent studies have noted a significant uptick in depression and suicidal thoughts over the past several years for teens, especially those who spend multiple hours a day using screens, and especially girls. But many of the pressures teenagers feel from social media are actually consistent with developmentally normal concerns around social standing and self-expression. Social media can certainly exacerbate these anxieties, but for parents to truly help their children cope, they should avoid making a blanket condemnation. Instead, parents should tailor their approach to the individual, learning where a particular child’s stressors lie and how that child can best gain control of this alluring, powerful way to connect with peers.

A Link Between Social Media and Mental Health Concerns

Many experts have described a rise in sleeplessness, loneliness, worry, and dependence among teenagers — a rise that coincides with the release of the first iPhone 10 years ago. One study found that 48 percent of teens who spend five hours per day on an electronic device have at least one suicide risk factor, compared to 33 percent of teens who spend two hours a day on an electronic device. We’ve all heard anecdotes, too, of teens being reduced to tears from the constant communication and comparisons that social media invites.

Through likes and follows, teens are “getting actual data on how much people like them and their appearance,” says Lindsey Giller, a clinical psychologist at the Child Mind Institute who specializes in youth and young adults with mood disorders. “And you’re not having any break from that technology.” She’s seen teens with anxiety, poor self-esteem, insecurity, and sadness attributed, at least in part, to constant social media use.

Teenage Challenges and Stressors, Exacerbated

But the connection between anxiety and social media might not be simple, or purely negative. Correlation does not equal causation; it may be that depression and anxiety lead to more social media use, for example, rather than the other way around. There could also be an unknown third variable — for instance, academic pressures or economic concerns — connecting them, or teens could simply be more likely to admit to mental health concerns now than they were in previous generations.

It’s also important to remember that teens experience social media in a wide range of ways. The ability to raise awareness, connect with people across the world, and share moments of beauty can be empowering and uplifting for some. And many teens understand that the images they see are curated snapshots, not real-life indicators, and are less likely to let those posts make them feel insecure about their own lives.

Above all, says researcher Emily Weinstein, who studies teens and their social media habits, parents need to keep in mind that it’s probably not just social media that’s making their teens anxious — it’s the normal social stressors that these platforms facilitate, albeit at a different size and scale.

“So many of the behaviors we’re talking about have pre-digital corollaries,” says Weinstein, a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. “They’re the same sort of developmental challenges that adolescents have grappled with for decades, though now they’re taking place in different spaces that can certainly amplify them and shift their quality, quantity, and scale.“

“But the idea of wanting to fit in, the critical importance of peer relationships, and the process of figuring out which version of yourself you want to be and how you want to express that identity to others — those features of adolescence are not new.”

What’s Triggering about Social Media?

Youth and technology expert Amanda Lenhart’s 2015 Pew study of teens, technology, and friendships reveals a range of social media-induced stressors:

  • Seeing people posting about events to which you haven’t been invited
  • Feeling pressure to post positive and attractive content about yourself
  • Feeling pressure to get comments and likes on your posts
  • Having someone post things about you that you cannot change or control

In analyses of thousands of adolescents’ reactions to digital stressors, Weinstein and her colleagues have found even more challenges:

  • Feeling replaceable: If you don’t respond to a best friend’s picture quickly or effusively enough, will she find a better friend?
  • Too much communication: A boyfriend or girlfriend wants you to be texting far more often than you’re comfortable with.
  • Digital “FOMO”: If you’re not up-to-date on the latest social media posts, will it prevent you from feeling like you can participate in real-life conversations at school the next day?
  • Attachment to actual devices: If your phone is out of reach, will your privacy be invaded? Will you miss a message from a friend when he needs you?

For Parents, Strategies on Mitigating Anxiety — Without Overreacting

With so many different stressors, a key piece of advice for parents is to individualize your approach. In the same way that different teenagers need different types of social support from their parents, they need different types of digital support, as well. Weinstein suggests that if your teen seems irritable or overwhelmed by social media, pay attention to what specifically is causing those feelings.

Giller agrees. “Really check in with your teen about what’s going on,” she says. Parents can and should help support and problem-solve with their teen, but they should also offer validation about how difficult these situations can be.

Relatedly, don’t just take your teen’s phone away if you suspect drama. Doing so won’t get to the heart of the social issue at play — and it could potentially make your teen more upset by separating her from her friends and other aspects of digital media she enjoys.

However, as a family, you can also set screen-free times — whether it’s every evening after 9 p.m., on the car ride to school, an occasional screen-free weekend, or longer stretches over vacations and camps. “Many teens say they appreciate” these chances, says education writer Anya Kamenetz, whose upcoming book The Art of Screen Time: How Your Family Can Balance Digital Media and Real Life  explores these issues in-depth.

A significant part of your teen’s phone habits may be related to her parents, too. “Be good role models in your own use of tech,” advises Kamenetz. That means being mindful of your own distracted habit of reaching for your cell, but it also means rejecting the isolation that screen time can generate. Make digital media an opportunity for real-life social opportunities, she says. Share some media activities with your teenager — playing games, watching YouTube clips, or reading up on mutual interests together.

And in most situations, it’s best to work with your teen to set social media expectations. “You want to build consensus and get their buy-in,” says Kamenetz. Constant surveillance or control won’t build trust. Make it an open, mutual discussion.

You want to get teens to put their devices down on their own, says Weinstein, “so that you’re helping them build their ability to manage their interactions with and through technology.” And that’s increasingly looking like a key life skill that we’ll all need to develop, now and into the future.

8 Reasons Why the Keto Diet My Not Work for You

The ketogenic diet is everywhere these days.

There are books dedicated to sharing the positives of a keto diet. There are cookbooks with hundreds of different keto-friendly meals. And there are social groups specifically based on the shared interest of living a keto lifestyle. These things would all indicate that the ketogenic diet is flourishing. And that may be true in certain cases, but there are several things to consider before taking the keto diet plunge yourself.

Does the Ketogenic Diet really work? 8 Points to consider

Point 1: The Keto Diet is Not Your Only Weight Loss Option

In a world full of diet experts, the keto diet is one of more than a hundred diets currently being marketed to those seeking to lose weight. Many diets draw you in with pretty promises of losing large amounts of weight, but it is important to consider which diet will fit your lifestyle. Is a high-fat diet doable for you? Are rich foods things you enjoy and can eat every day? Will cutting out fruits and grains affect your mood in a negative way? If you answered yes, or even hesitated in answering any of these questions, the keto diet may not be a successful, long-term diet option for you. It required complete and total dedication to maintaining a high ketone level, and an ideal environment to burn ketones from fat instead of glucose from carbs. There are many other diet options if you cannot spend a great deal of time or energy managing a keto diet.

Point 2: It May Be Effective But Is Hardly Practical

If you’re a social butterfly and like to eat out, the keto diet may be very hard to manage for you. Staying in ketosis means eating mostly fats with some protein and very little carbs. Many restaurants don’t specifically cater to a ketogenic diet and it may be hard to find meal options that fit within your limits. Going out for dinner may require some online research of restaurant menus and ketogenic-friendly options. With so much time focused on maintaining a ketogenic diet, it may be difficult to have a fun and carefree time. It’s much easier to live a ketogenic lifestyle if you’re able to meal plan at home. Sadly, this isn’t a very fun option if you like eating out at restaurants surrounded by friends.

Point 3: The Grocery Bill Will Be Astronomical

If you’re shopping on a budget, a ketogenic diet is going to cause major headaches in meal planning. Fats and proteins are usually much more costly than carbohydrate options. You may actually eat less by feeling full longer while on a ketogenic diet, but you will most likely spend much more for well-rounded meal options. In many areas of the world, dairy products can come with a big price tag. And meal options such as bacon, steak, and salmon are also costly. Although you’ll be cutting out most fruit, which can save money, you’ll be buying plenty of keto-friendly vegetables, making your produce cost rather high as well. So if you stick to a strict budget while grocery shopping, it may be a better idea to find a healthy dieting lifestyle that doesn’t break the bank.

Point 4: The Gym Won’t Give You the Gains You’re Looking For

If you’re into strength training and lifting weights, you won’t be finding the muscles you’re working so hard for while on a ketogenic diet. Limited protein intake prevents the muscles from gaining mass. So while ketogenic diets generally give you a lean, defined look, muscle bulking probably won’t be happening. If gains are your priority, it would be best to find an eating plan that includes plenty of protein.

Point 5: Are You in Ketosis or Aren’t You?

It can be difficult to know offhand whether or not your body is in a state of ketosis. Without accurately measuring your ketone level with strips, it can be difficult to know if your body is actually in the fat-burning stage. Depending on the type of food eaten throughout the day and how your body reacts to it, your ketone level can be high, low, or non-existent. And if you’re not actually in ketosis, eating a ketogenic diet is definitely not a fast way to lose weight.

Point 6: Athletic Performance May Suffer

High-intensity workouts require carbohydrates as fuel. During a high-intensity session, the body is burning many calories and in need of a sustainable energy source. Glucose, produced from the breakdown of carbohydrates, provides this energy source. This is why many athletes load up on carbs before a heavy lift or drink a pre-workout energizer before faster-paced routines. Ketones, produced from the breakdown of fat, cannot provide this added stamina and endurance as they are not slow-burning, able to withstand high energy levels for extended periods of time.

Athletes on a ketogenic diet may tire more quickly and have less endurance. Thus, their performance will greatly suffer. It’s actually difficult for athletes to sustain their energy while on a ketogenic diet because they expel so much energy. A carb-heavy diet would actually help athletes in this regard by providing the needed boost in energy to sustain peak performance.

Point 7: You May Fall Short in Meeting Your Recommended Daily Calorie Intake

Eating foods high in fat means that your hunger is better satiated and you don’t feel the need to eat as often. High-fat foods may also make one think that the fewer calories consumed the better since fats have been considered harmful to healthy eating for decades. It is for these reasons that someone on a ketogenic diet may actually not reach their recommended caloric intake every day. That may be great for losing weight, but it isn’t the best idea when you think about maintaining metabolism and providing enough energy to sustain your body. Calorie tracking is a very important tool when living a ketogenic lifestyle to ensure you reach all your daily nutritional goals.

Point 8: Consider Your Food Choices

All fats are not the same. Some are more harmful than others, and some can actually be very beneficial to the body. When following a high-fat diet, it is important to consider the types of food you are eating and their nutritional value. Grass-fed meats, nuts, and avocados are all high in good, quality fats. They provide excellent nutritional value. These are the kinds of fatty foods that will serve you well on a ketogenic diet. On the other end of the spectrum, fats from processed foods like pizza, cheese products, and sausages are not great choices for your health. Just because you are eating a ketogenic diet does not mean you should be filling up on processed foods. They are still not great options when you consider your overall health and wellness.

Final Words

While many people enjoy the keto lifestyle and its benefits, there are important considerations to think about before starting such an intense diet. Diets like this are not a one-size-fits-all solution to weight loss. What works for one person may fail miserably for the next. Many people who succeed on the ketogenic diet are easily adaptable to its demands. It is always important to find a healthy diet option that you can manage to do and remain motivated throughout.

Some educators would like to believe that their job is to be content specialists, but increasingly they are realizing that without the social and emotional skills to navigate setbacks and difficult relationships kids won’t learn much. Some schools weave social and emotional learning throughout the day, integrating it with content, while others use advisory as a place students can talk about their problems. Mindfulness has gained traction in classrooms. And, increasingly schools are explicitly focusing on the value of kindness.

In his New York Times article Richard Schiffman discusses one kindness program inspired by the Dalai Lama’s call to take contemplative practice out of a religious context and make it useful to people’s lives. A big chunk of the program aims to help young kids name their emotions and talk through them. Schiffman writes there’s some research backing up the approach too.

They may also fare better later in life. One 2015 study that tracked kindergartners to young adulthood found that individuals with good prosocial skills — behavior that is positive, helpful and friendly — tended to be more successful as adults than those who did well in subjects like reading and math but lacked the ability to get along with others.

The Kindness Curriculum is part of a growing global movement to teach emotional intelligence in schools. Advocates of this approach say it’s shortsighted for teachers to focus narrowly on intellectual learning and ignore the cooperative emotional skills that enable learning — and learners — to flourish.

Still, some question whether personality traits like kindness can be taught.

Can Kindness Be Taught?

Since the curriculum was introduced in August, more than 15,000 educators, parents and others from around the world have signed up for it. P.S. 212, which is in a neighborhood in Jackson Heights that is home to many new immigrants, was one of the first public schools in New York City to introduce mindfulness-based practices like yoga.
